I started playing saxophone when I was eight years old and it is my big passion to this day. I had the amazing oportunity to learn from Mark Turner and Chris Cheek during my time at the Jazzcampus in Basel. Other important teachers have been: Domenic Landolf, Daniel Blanc, Alexander von Hagke, Jürgen Federer and Gregor Bürgel.
I first picked up the silver flute when I was sixteen and ended up choosing it as my second instrument in university. There I received a classical European training for three years with Günter Wehinger. My mentor the flutist Omer Gonen-Haela continues to be a huge inspiration for me. I also study the Shakuhachi with Akihito Obama and enjoy playing Quena.
The guitar is definitely the instrument I learned the quickest. I picked it up in the summer of 2023 and ended up playing more and more. Eventually, I found myself obsessively practicing through the nights, studying Brazilian guitar and Flamenco with Carioca Freitas and Felipe Coelho online. I also began composing and working with the guitar professionally.
I have been trained in percussion since my days at the Jazzschool, but didn't get serious about it until I met Luisa Drua. I was fascinated by her connection to traditions in which drums are used for very specific rituals. Studying with her has deepened my understanding of the therapeutic and trance-inducing application of music.
Studying and playing oud for me is a way to connect with my Turkish ancestry. It has broadened my horizon and deepened my understanding of oriental music. My flute playing has been profoundly influenced by this and I cannot wait to go deeper. I am looking forward to spending time in Istanbul to formally study the oud with a teacher.
